Art

Intent

At Old Hill Primary School, we believe that Art and Design plays an important role in enabling children to express their creativity, develop their imagination and explore ideas. Our art curriculum aims to inspire pupils and give them the confidence to experiment, invent and create their own works of art.

Through a carefully planned curriculum, pupils develop their knowledge and skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking and digital art. Children also learn about a range of artists, craftspeople and designers from different cultures and historical periods. By studying the work of others, pupils gain an understanding of how art reflects and shapes the world around us.

Our aim is for all pupils to develop the confidence to explore their own ideas, take creative risks and develop their own artistic voice.

Implementation

Art at Old Hill Primary School is taught using the Kapow Primary Art and Design scheme, which provides a carefully structured and progressive curriculum from Year 1 to Year 6. The scheme ensures that pupils develop their knowledge and skills across a range of artistic disciplines including drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking and digital art. Through carefully sequenced lessons, pupils are introduced to a wide variety of materials, tools and techniques and are encouraged to experiment, take creative risks and develop confidence in their artistic abilities.

Pupils learn about a range of significant artists, craftspeople and designers from different cultures and historical periods. By studying and responding to the work of others, pupils develop an understanding of how art reflects ideas, culture and society.

Sketchbooks are a key part of the art curriculum and are used throughout the school as a space for pupils to explore and develop their ideas. Within their sketchbooks, children practise techniques, record observations, experiment with materials and reflect on their learning. Pupils are encouraged to revisit and refine their ideas over time, helping them to understand that art is a process of exploration, experimentation and improvement. Through this approach, pupils develop resilience, independence and confidence as young artists. The Kapow scheme ensures that pupils progressively develop their knowledge and skills across each year group, allowing them to build on prior learning while deepening their understanding of artistic techniques, materials and creative processes.

Impact

By the time pupils leave Old Hill Primary School, they will have developed a wide range of artistic skills and techniques and will understand how art can be used as a form of communication and expression.

Pupils will be able to:

  • use a variety of materials and techniques confidently

  • develop and refine their artistic ideas

  • evaluate and discuss works of art using appropriate vocabulary

  • understand the work of significant artists, craftspeople and designers

Through regular opportunities to explore and create, pupils develop creativity, resilience and pride in their work. They leave primary school with the confidence to express themselves through art and with a strong appreciation of creativity.
