Computing

Our Vision for Computing

At Old Hill Primary School, we believe computing is an essential part of modern life and a key skill for the future. Our computing curriculum equips pupils with the knowledge, skills and confidence to use technology safely, responsibly and creatively.

Technology plays an increasingly important role in society, and we aim to ensure that all pupils leave our school digitally literate and able to participate confidently in a rapidly changing technological world. Through engaging and carefully planned learning experiences, pupils develop the skills to become thoughtful problem-solvers, creative thinkers and responsible digital citizens.

Intent

The intent of our computing curriculum is to develop pupils who:

  • understand the fundamental principles of computer science

  • develop computational thinking and problem-solving skills

  • become confident in programming and coding

  • use technology to create, communicate and present ideas

  • understand how technology works and how it shapes the world around them

  • know how to use the internet safely, respectfully and responsibly

Our curriculum ensures that pupils gain experience across the three key areas of computing:

Computer Science

Pupils learn how computers work and how programs are created. They develop their understanding of algorithms, programming and logical thinking.

Information Technology

Pupils learn how to use technology effectively to create digital content such as presentations, animations, documents and multimedia projects.

Digital Literacy

Pupils develop the knowledge and skills to use technology safely and responsibly, including understanding online safety, digital communication and the importance of protecting personal information.

Implementation

Computing is taught throughout the school in a carefully sequenced curriculum that builds knowledge and skills progressively from Early Years through to Year 6.

Lessons provide opportunities for pupils to:

  • design, write and debug programs

  • use logical reasoning to solve problems

  • collect, analyse and present data

  • create digital media including text, images, animation and video

  • collaborate and communicate using digital tools

  • develop an understanding of how networks and the internet operate

Pupils use a range of digital technologies including computers, tablets and programmable devices. Lessons are designed to be practical and engaging so that pupils can apply their knowledge through meaningful projects and real-world contexts.

Online safety is embedded throughout the computing curriculum and reinforced across other subjects. Pupils learn how to stay safe online, recognise risks and behave responsibly when using digital technology.

Teachers ensure that learning is accessible to all pupils through modelling, scaffolding and adaptive teaching. This ensures that every child can develop confidence and success in computing.

 Impact

The impact of our computing curriculum is that pupils leave Old Hill Primary School as confident and capable users of technology.

By the end of Year 6 pupils will:

  • understand key computing concepts such as algorithms, programming and data

  • use technology creatively to produce digital work

  • demonstrate logical thinking and problem-solving skills

  • understand how to stay safe online

  • use technology responsibly and respectfully

  • be well prepared for the next stage of their computing education

Pupils’ progress in computing is monitored through:

  • ongoing teacher assessment

  • observation of practical computing tasks

  • pupil discussion about their learning

  • review of digital outcomes and projects

Through this approach, pupils develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to thrive in an increasingly digital world.

Enrichment Opportunities

Computing at Old Hill Primary School is enriched through opportunities that extend learning beyond the classroom. Pupils may take part in activities such as:

  • digital creativity projects

  • coding challenges

  • online safety events

  • technology-based learning across the curriculum

These experiences help pupils understand how computing connects with the wider world and future careers.
