Music

The intent of our primary school music curriculum is to provide all children with high-quality, enriching musical experiences through both curriculum-based and extra-curricular opportunities. With specialist music teachers delivering our curriculum, we ensure that every child receives expert instruction, building their musical knowledge, creativity, and performance skills.

Our curriculum is designed to inspire a love for music and develop an understanding of key musical concepts such as rhythm, melody, pitch, and dynamics. Through singing, composing, listening, and performing, children will explore a wide range of musical genres and traditions. We aim to foster creativity, self-expression, and confidence, encouraging children to appreciate the cultural significance of music and its ability to bring people together.

Beyond the curriculum, children are given the opportunity to learn instruments such as the violin, ukulele and recorder, enabling them to further develop their technical and performance skills. They can also join our school choir, where they can experience the joy of group singing and develop their vocal skills.

We celebrate music within our school community through a variety of performances, including our summer festival and other events for families and the wider school. These opportunities allow children to showcase their talents, build confidence, and take pride in their musical achievements.

By the time our pupils leave Old Hill Primary School, they will have developed a broad understanding of music, a range of practical skills, and a deep appreciation for the role of music in different cultures and communities.

What's Unique?

Our pupils have over an hour per week of music provision:

  • 30 mins / week of specialist singing tuition from our peripatetic vocal coach.
