Phonics and Spelling

The intent of our phonics curriculum, underpinned by the ‘Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised’ programme, is to provide a systematic and effective approach to teaching reading and early literacy skills. We aim to ensure that every child becomes a confident, fluent reader, equipping them with the foundational skills they need to access the wider curriculum and develop a lifelong love of reading.

Our phonics teaching is delivered in a consistent, structured, and progressive manner, ensuring that children build strong phonological awareness, develop their decoding and blending skills, and apply these confidently when reading and writing. The ‘Little Wandle’ programme is designed to support children at different stages of their phonics journey, with tailored interventions in place to ensure that no child is left behind.

Through daily, engaging phonics lessons, children are taught the 44 phonemes and graphemes of the English language, with a focus on accurate pronunciation, letter formation, and word-building. Children are encouraged to read books matched to their phonics knowledge, enabling them to experience success and build fluency from an early stage.

Our phonics curriculum also emphasizes the importance of developing vocabulary and comprehension skills alongside phonics knowledge, ensuring that children not only learn to read but also develop a deep understanding of the texts they encounter. By embedding a love of reading from the start, we aim to foster confident, enthusiastic readers who take pride in their progress.

Key Aims:

  • Ensure all children secure phonemic awareness and develop strong decoding and blending skills.
  • Provide consistent and systematic phonics teaching through the *Little Wandle* programme.
  • Support fluency and accuracy in reading through books matched to phonics levels.
  • Deliver targeted support for children who need additional help, ensuring every child achieves reading success.
  • Foster a love of reading and early literacy that extends beyond phonics into broader comprehension and enjoyment of texts.
