Physical Education
Our Vision for Physical Education
At Old Hill Primary School, we believe that physical education is a vital part of every child’s development. Through high-quality PE lessons and sporting opportunities, we aim to inspire pupils to develop a lifelong love of physical activity and sport.
Physical education helps pupils develop physical confidence, teamwork, resilience and determination. Through participation in a wide range of activities, pupils learn the importance of healthy lifestyles, fair play and perseverance.
Our aim is for all pupils to enjoy being active, challenge themselves and develop the confidence to take part in sport and physical activity both during and beyond their time at primary school.
Intent
The intent of our PE curriculum is to ensure that all pupils:
-
develop fundamental movement skills including running, jumping, throwing and catching
-
build balance, coordination and agility
-
develop confidence in a wide range of sports and physical activities
-
understand the importance of physical fitness and healthy lifestyles
-
learn to work collaboratively and show teamwork, respect and sportsmanship
-
develop resilience and determination through competition and personal challenge
Our curriculum introduces pupils to a variety of activities including:
-
games and team sports
-
gymnastics
-
dance
-
athletics
-
outdoor and adventurous activities
These experiences ensure pupils develop both physical competence and a positive attitude towards being active.
Implementation
At Old Hill Primary School, PE is taught through the Get Set 4 PE scheme of work, which provides a carefully structured and progressive curriculum from Early Years through to Year 6.
Get Set 4 PE supports teachers by providing:
-
clear lesson plans and learning objectives
-
progressive units of work
-
assessment opportunities
-
curriculum mapping across all year groups
This ensures that pupils build on prior learning and develop their physical skills progressively as they move through the school. The scheme provides opportunities for pupils to develop both physical skills and knowledge of rules, tactics and strategies in sport.
Pupils take part in regular PE lessons where they practise and refine key physical skills. Lessons are designed to be inclusive and engaging so that all pupils can participate and experience success.
Teachers provide modelling, feedback and opportunities for pupils to reflect on their performance so that they can continually improve their skills and confidence.
Early Years
In the Early Years Foundation Stage, physical development is supported through both structured PE sessions and daily opportunities for active play.
Children develop early movement skills through activities that encourage:
-
running, jumping and balancing
-
coordination and spatial awareness
-
throwing and catching
-
movement to music and dance
These early experiences help children develop the fundamental skills that form the foundation for future PE learning.
Impact
The impact of our PE curriculum is that pupils leave Old Hill Primary School with the knowledge, skills and confidence to participate in a wide range of physical activities.
By the end of Year 6 pupils will:
-
demonstrate competence in a broad range of physical activities
-
apply skills and tactics in games and sports
-
perform with control and coordination
-
understand the importance of physical activity for health and wellbeing
-
show teamwork, resilience and respect during competition
Through regular participation in sport and physical activity, pupils develop positive attitudes towards healthy lifestyles and physical wellbeing.
Sporting Opportunities and Enrichment
Physical activity is an important part of school life at Old Hill Primary School and pupils are given a range of opportunities to participate in sport beyond their PE lessons.
These opportunities may include:
-
school sports events and festivals
-
inter-school competitions
-
active playtimes and lunchtime activities
-
opportunities to represent the school in sport
These experiences help pupils develop confidence, teamwork and a sense of pride in representing their school.
Cultural Capital
Sport and physical activity play an important role in developing pupils’ character and wellbeing. Through participation in a wide range of sports and activities, pupils develop resilience, teamwork, leadership and respect for others.
These experiences help prepare pupils for future sporting participation and encourage them to lead healthy, active lifestyles.
