Spanish
Our Vision for Languages
At Old Hill Primary School, we believe learning a language opens doors to new cultures, ideas and opportunities. Our Spanish curriculum aims to develop pupils’ curiosity about languages and to provide them with the knowledge and confidence to communicate in another language.
Through engaging and interactive learning, pupils develop the skills to listen, speak, read and write in Spanish. We want children to enjoy learning languages and to develop an appreciation of the diverse cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.
Our curriculum lays strong foundations for further language learning at secondary school and encourages pupils to become confident, curious and respectful global citizens.
Intent
The intent of our Spanish curriculum is to develop pupils who:-
develop confidence in listening, speaking, reading and writing Spanish
-
build a growing vocabulary that allows them to express ideas and communicate meaning
-
understand key aspects of Spanish grammar and sentence structure
-
develop accurate pronunciation and intonation
-
gain an understanding of Spanish culture and traditions
-
develop curiosity and respect for languages and cultures around the world
Through learning Spanish, pupils also strengthen their understanding of language more broadly, helping them develop greater awareness of how language works.

Teachers model correct pronunciation and encourage pupils to speak Spanish regularly in lessons so that confidence develops over time. Pupils also learn about the culture, traditions and geography of Spanish-speaking countries, helping them develop a wider understanding of the world.
Learning is carefully adapted so that all pupils, including those with SEND, can access and enjoy language learning.
