Curriculum
Curriculum Intent
At Old Hill Primary School our curriculum is designed to provide all pupils with the foundational knowledge, skills and experiences they need to succeed in the next stage of their education and in life.
Our curriculum is broad, balanced and ambitious for all learners. It ensures pupils develop strong foundations in reading, writing and mathematics while also experiencing a rich range of subjects including science, history, geography, art, music, computing and physical education.
We aim to develop confident, resilient and curious learners who are proud of their achievements and their community.
Implementation
Our curriculum is carefully planned to ensure knowledge and skills build progressively from Nursery through to Year 6.
Each subject has a clear progression of knowledge and skills which allows pupils to deepen their understanding over time.
Teachers use a range of strategies to support learning including:
-
clear explanations and modelling
-
opportunities for practice and application
-
questioning to deepen understanding
-
assessment to identify next steps
Learning is adapted to ensure all pupils, including those with SEND, are able to access the curriculum.
Impact
At Old Hill Primary School, our curriculum is carefully planned so that pupils gain secure knowledge, develop key skills, use subject-specific vocabulary confidently and deepen their understanding over time. This enables pupils to remember more, make meaningful connections across their learning and apply what they know with increasing independence and confidence.
The impact of our curriculum is seen in what pupils know, remember and are able to do as they progress through the school. Learning is carefully sequenced so that pupils revisit and build upon prior knowledge, allowing them to develop deeper understanding and increasing fluency across the curriculum.
In foundation subjects, teachers consider pupils’ learning through four key elements: knowledge, skills, vocabulary and understanding. This approach ensures that pupils not only learn important curriculum content, but are also able to apply practical skills, use subject-specific language accurately and explain their thinking with increasing depth.
As a result, pupils leave Old Hill Primary School with:
• secure knowledge across a broad and balanced curriculum
• the ability to apply skills and knowledge in different contexts
• confidence in using subject-specific vocabulary
• the ability to explain their thinking and make connections across their learning
• independence, resilience and pride in their achievements
Leaders evaluate the impact of the curriculum through ongoing teacher assessment, work scrutiny, pupil discussions and subject leader monitoring. These processes ensure that pupils are building knowledge over time and that the curriculum continues to meet the needs of all learners.
